I’m lucky because my dog is just over two years old and she listens to me 95 times out of 100. Even when there’s another person or dog a few feet away she will stop when I tell her to even when she’s off lead.
She will come to me 98 times out of 100 when she’s off lead and she will wait for me to put on her lead.
I’ve always used positive reinforcement and never lost my temper with her.

That’s so cool! We’ve tried what feels like every avenue with Ryan. He’s just not like any other dog we’ve had 😂 We tried the positive thing at first, then we got more strict, but that just psyched him up more and was absolutely no good.
So yeah, we’ve been back to the positive reinforcement for a while now 😅 but we’re still pulling our hair out. He’s not a dog! He’s a 10 on the Richter Scale! 🤣 But we’ll get there! It’s just gonna take time.
He’s not even a year old yet. He started being more civil, until we had him neutered, then he just went downhill from there. Which is strange, because we thought that might have mallowed him out a bit. I only hope one day he will be as obedient as your dog 😊

@VideoJamesNZ it’s taken me two years to where she is at now. She was the same as your dog at one year old but I stuck with the positive reinforcement and was consistent with the training. It takes a lot of time and patience to get there.
Also it’s not strange for them to go downhill with training because they have stages. He’s at the stage of testing you now , trying to see what he can get away with. You have to remain consistent and not let up no matter how frustrating it gets. The testing you stage lasts a few months so try to not let down your guard and stick with it. Don’t let him get away with doing the opposite to what you want him to do.

You sound like a great trainer for your dog.

This is a really great help! Thank you so much! Our Jack Russell terrier, Ryan is driving us insane! He’s 8 months old and most videos just say we’re not giving him enough attention.
I think we are very fair with that and it’s when we turn away and expect him to self soothe, he just won’t. Instead he goes completely crazy and almost punishes us for doing so, by deliberately chewing things he shouldn’t and running around like crazy, jumping all over us.
When we play with him, he gets very obsessed, like he NEVER gets tired of fetching his frisbee, to the point where he almost gives himself a heart attack, because he’s so out of breath, but even then he still keeps wanting us to throw it.
He doesn’t even have the self awareness to go grab a drink of water, he’s just so fixated on trying to get me to throw the frisbee again and again. He does the same with his rubber chicken toy.
Infact, if you stop throwing it for him, he will actually hit you with it! 😂 I’m not even joking! He comes up to you with the rubber chicken in his mouth, gets really close and starts shaking his head violently on purpose, trying to hit you with it 🤣 it’s the weirdest thing!
We’ve never had a dog do that before. He’s crazy I tell ya! So we will try these tips 😅 Hopefully we can set him straight. Thank you!

I love your training advice Shannon. It always makes sense and has really helped me train my reactive rescue dog (he is part Labrador , part Sighthound), and I have listened to all your Podcasts with Ken, Robbie and now Christine (Swanny) and I have not only learnt so much, but the Podcasts make me laugh a lot. Thanks so much. x
