How To Train A Dream Dog
Thanks for watching Puppy Crate Setup – Using A Puppy Playpen! Where do you set your playpen and crate up, in your home?
Dayle Ouellet
We have ours set up in our living room. We have tried a few different configurations and the most effective one was when we had access to the crate while in the pen. After watching this video I am going to put it back together that way again! We also have a crate in our bedroom and one in living room, but I think we will stick to just the living room and cover with sheet for sleeping at night. Everything time she moves or decides to chew her bone it wakes us up.
Annie Hui-Hsin Hsieh
If we are supposed to be keeping the crate closer to us at night in the first few days when the puppy comes home, and that the crate should be inside the play pen, does that mean we should also set up the pen in our bedroom as well? Or is it a terrible idea to set up the crate and play pen in the living room and just move the crate to our bedroom at night? thanks!

@Annie Hui-Hsin HsiehGood question
Laura Bernay
We have a crate attached to a pen in the main part of the house where everything happens and she is happy there. We have a second in our bedroom for when I am in there working at my desk and she can be with me. She spends time in both by herself and seems to have no anxiety about being alone.

Great tips! I like your idea of putting a board underneath the pen to protect the floor.
Michele Lennon
Thanks Kathy, after one too many of our floors got ruined it was time for a change. I figured others would want to keep their floors protected too. 🙂
Kelsey Cardoni
Michele Lennon where can I get the large tile you have in this video?
Laura Meng
@Kelsey Cardoni I have the same question.

Great video! We set up a play pin for our dogs in the living room!
Michele Lennon
Awesome!! What toys do you add in there?
ESL Notes
mainly chewing toys like ropes or those search for the treat cones 🙂

We use the crate for night time, and the play pen during the day. It seems like she enjoys being in the play pen much more and goes in there willingly. She will go into the crate at night time, but she is not very happy about it. The crate and play pen are in separate rooms. I am sure it is because we conditioned her to enjoy play pen much more. Would you recommend letting her sleep in the play pen and just getting rid of the crate ?
Capsytalk
Hi, this video confuses me a little bit. Should you always have the grate and playpen in one? or keep those too separate? Cause in this video it seems you put the grate in the playpen

Hello great advice and videos – Michelle, My labrador puppy is 4 months old, I live in an apartment compound with lots of grass and a park near by. Her create is on the balcony which acts as her pen.She is quite happy to play and sleep there while I am at work. However, (there is always a but…) when she is in there while I am doing choirs or watching tv she continually barks. I have tried the praising and giving her treats when she is quiet and then releasing her only when she is quiet. She does not seem anxious just likes to bark and tell me she wants to be with me.

I came up with a unique way to keep my puppy from chewing up her puppy pads. I use one of those clear very low plastic containers, the pads fit it perfectally and she just jumps over the little lip and she doesn’t pull around her pads. She’s a ShihTzu and about six to seven lbs. The first three days were difficult but after that she never pulled the pads out or chew on them and they don’t slide around! It’s really worked perfect for me. In her area , which is 10 x10, her bed is there, her food and water and a play pads Where she can play. I had to have everything in one space because I’m disabled and needed her to have everything she needs if I have to leave her in there for more than a few hours during the day. Night time is a breeze. She gets up and pees and goes back to bed. I have a curtían blocking off this space so if she needs less stimulation that is possible. It’s like a dream puppy space and for ME it works fantastic.

I don’t know what you mean by a really low plastic clear container for puppy pads

My puppy will be coming to me “litter box trained” from the breeder. As my puppy is going to be going through service dog training with the eventual goal of being able to travel with me (I have a disability that effects my mobility and I also have asthma) it is important that she learns that there will be times that she is asked to “go potty” indoors (like on a cruise ship, during blizzards when its -30 degrees out and I can’t be out in that weather). Some trainers do not seem to realize that there are times when you may need to leave your dog for a longer than desirable time and they shouldn’t feel physically uncomfortable because they are trying to “hold it” or feel ashamed that they had an accident. My beagle is 15 years old. For the past 3 years I have left puppy pads down for him to use if he needs it during the night. Maybe once a week he will need to use it. It’s a simple clean up and he doesn’t have to feel like he did anything wrong.

I am loving your videos so far. I appreciate how detailed and clear you are with instructions and explanations! I haven’t looked at the downloads from the puppy kit – the cheat sheet, checklist, training chart, schedule, etc. but I am so excited because I know I will function better having these visuals to reference!! Thank you!! And, are you Canadian? My husband is Canadian 🙂

I love the idea of the protective layer in the pen area!! Great tip! Great videos!

Your videos are always so helpful. This video in particular answered a few questions I’d been mauling over. My corgi pup Thatcher comes home in 3 weeks. 🐶 I couldn’t be more excited…but I’m nervous and your videos are really helping me to feel prepared, so thank you!

Wow–you are a great/smooth speaker and teacher! School kids would be lucky if you were their instructor.
I’m getting a Bichon Frise puppy, so he will be small. I thought about an eight-sided pen with the crate inside it in our kitchen because it has a tile floor (other rooms have carpet or hardwood). You show either a smallish rectangle pen or a six-sided model. Do you think an octagon is way too big for that size of a puppy? Also, the kitchen is a more active and busy room in our house (no young kids, though). A nearby Sunroom is more isolated and has carpet. What’s best–a tiled kitchen with more commotion OR a carpeted Sunroom but quieter?

I have the puppy playpen which I can move from room to room along with a small carry crate which is where she will sleep. She is a Shih-Poo only weighing 3 lbs. Will only get up to 8-10 lbs.

I loved the video! I’m getting a puppy in August and I can’t wait. What was the flooring you put under the puppy area?
How To Train A Dream Dog
We like to use plywood or linoleum. You can get it from any hardware store!
Jason
Thanks for all your videos! Great stuff. Question for hardwood owners… Should I get a used area rug for the playpen so my puppy doesn’t slide and skid when playing? My whole house is hardwoods except for my bedrooms, so I want it to be comfortable
How To Train A Dream Dog
Great question! We recommend using linoleum to protect your floors, and it’s perfect for an easy clean up, too! You can put a dog bed in the pen for your pup to lay comfortably on, but be sure to supervise so you can prevent your dog from ingesting the stuffing when they enter into the teething phase and become more curious.

Love these videos. We will be bringing home a 9 week old pup in about 4 weeks. I’m feeling a bit more confident after watching your videos.

We’ve had our 14 week puppy for a week now and we gave her our apartment space and it’s going horribly😂 we’re getting her a pen today because we want our couch back and her to stop chewing stuff. She’s incredibly sassy and is going to hate it but hopefully get used to it so she has her own space and can stay out of trouble …
How To Train A Dream Dog
We’re glad you’re choosing to get a puppy pen! Using a puppy pen is a great way to help your puppy stay safe while you are busy with household chores and you can’t keep your eyes on them 100% of the time. Puppies need to learn to start spending time away from you while keeping themselves busy (in a safe way).
A puppy pen is not for sleeping and napping. We keep our puppies in a crate for all naps and at bedtime. The space is more cozy and this helps them sleep instead of staying in play mode.
This video can tell you about one possible set up for a pen. You may choose to keep the crate in/near it or it’s fine to keep it separate too.

I’m loving your videos. I haven’t had a puppy in 25 years, I’ve been watching to get prepared. I’m bringing my mini dachshund home in 2 weeks. How big of a puppy playpen should I get?
How To Train A Dream Dog
Oh wow! This is such an exciting time for you! We’re very glad that you’ve begun to prepare yourself with our videos. We’re going to share some resources at the bottom of this comment that you may want to check out for even more preparation! Your puppy playpen should be big enough for your puppy to explore around in. You will also want to consider that your puppy playpen may hold your crate, so it should provide adequate room for that as well!

I would love to hear your comment on having two puppies and how to setup a pen for them. We have twin brother Shih Tzus about 20 weeks old. Yeah, we should have thought this through a bit more. Thanks in Advance. Stressed out in Pennsylvania.
How To Train A Dream Dog
Hey there in PA! Your pups should definitely have their own pens and crates. We don’t want them to have too much time around one another. When they do, it should always be supervised. Here’s a video we have on littermates, if you haven’t seen it already.
