We have a 12 week pup that bites all the time. Bites and humps us. We were doing the here’s a bone thing but it’s only getting worse. Do you have any videos that address this? Our 18 year old chronically ill daughter bought her as an emotional companion dog, but she is in tears over all the nonstop biting. Any suggestions? She wants to rehome her this week because she can’t take anymore.

This is going to sound odd, but I have a suggestion. Most puppies go through a very bitey-mouthy stage. I have an Aussie, and as a herding dog, they tend to really bite a lot as puppies. What worked for me was yelping. When she bit me, I would yelp (high-pitched and loud, like if she hurt another dog), and then slowly walk away/turn away. Cross your arms, stand still, and COMPLETELY ignore the puppy. I’ve never encountered a case of puppy-biting that this doesn’t work with because the puppy isn’t trying to hurt you. They are usually just excited and trying to play. Also… a tired puppy is a well-behaved one. Play fetch or something tires the puppy out. Also, basic obedience training is great exercise (for the brain), and that also helps tire puppies out.

We’re at 17 weeks. I was lucky in that both the pet store people and a few training videos I watched (maybe even another McCann video) reminded me how inflamed and painful their poor gums are at this stage. This week I noticed how much less she’s even trying to bite. It’s not my training so much as her pain is easing. We just didn’t reinforce the biting when she did it (thx to generous trainers sharing videos)and she also lost our attention when we walked away for her to calm down. Hang in there. Like teens w people, much of this stuff is a development stage that will pass.

@Emily Estelle weve tried the yelping but she thinks it’s a game. And we’ve tried ignoring her but she then will bite and just hang on. Any ideas???
She will come out of her crate and Bit you even after a nice long nap…

@Steve Orner most of the things mentioned did not work. Our pitull pup was BAD with nipping. Except our pup was very picky on what she chewed. I spent alot of money on bully sticks and yak cheese 🤷♂️
