One good correction will usually get it done

Using what correction?

Great information. Thank you. Can you also address how to manage leash training for miniature breeds. It’s easy to practice these tips when the dog is at knee level but my mini schnauzer puppy is only about mid calf high right now and walking him and constantly bending down to treat/train is challenging. Every video on leash training shows medium and large breeds.
Laura Joli
Yes! These techniques help, but my dog is small.
True Cynic
Try changing directions away from the direction your small dog is pulling in. Do this over and over again and eventually your dog will get it.
Susan Fitz-Gerald Smith
Agree. Add on bad knees and that bending way down is really difficult.

Hi there, DJ66! The EXACT same rules apply for this video to dogs of any size/breed/age! I do have a small breed playlist that will help with some of your questions specificaly: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL7BBgLulherlkxc5-d4Ycwzb0ROhe9Bvn

@McCann Dog Training thanks!!!!

Useful stuff, I’ll continue practising, practicing, practicing! I re homed my retriever (Dave) when he was 8 months and he’s now 20 months; he’d never walked on a leash until I got him – he’s nearly there now, luckily I consider myself to be very patient. I’m my experience training a dog to behave well at anything is a slow process, months NOT weeks. I’ve been lucky enough to have had four Golden Retrievers, the females were much less challenging than Dave….is this your experience? He was a ‘lockdown’ dog so was never socialised, he’s very reactive (excitement) to most other dogs but ok with people. I’d be interested to see any videos you’ve done on reactivity (in the real world with dogs, not just ‘teaching’.
PS: Your ‘backyard’ is HUGE, looks more like a park in the UK!🇬🇧

Good advice – good tips!!! How excellent that you do not fall into the traps of using shock or prong or any other inhumane device to train your dogs!!! Obviously an excellent dog training school!!

This has been our biggest struggle with our golden shepherd. She’s a little over a year now and she still has terrible leash manners. We’ve had her since she was 7 weeks and we’ve been training her nonstop and even did a 6 week training course with a trainer and focused mainly on lose leash walking. We’ve tried so many things and NOTHING has worked. She knows look at me and wait and she’s great until we start moving. I just can’t get her to stay focused on me while we’re in motion. That’s been the hardest part for me. She usually puts her nose to the ground and starts pulling as soon as we take ONE step forward. She starts looking for rabbit pellets on the ground to eat or sticks to play with. I’ve tried high value treats, real meat, her favorite toys, nothing has worked. It almost seems like she has major ADHD at times. She gets distracted so easily and she has never ending energy. We always play with her before starting a walk or training session to get at least some of her energy out but she just keeps going and going.

I don’t see the checklist you said would be in the comments. Maybe I just don’t understand how to retrieve it?

Hi there, Susan! It’s in the description of this video. I grabbed it for you “Build a distraction ladder for YOUR dog HERE: https://mccanndogs.link/DistractionLadder”

@McCann Dog Training thanks so much. I don’t always understand navigating YouTube! I can’t tell you how much I appreciate the information that y’all at McCanna dogs put it out for us! From the day, I picked up my eight week old pup (Jam—a Cavalier) until today at four months old, y’all have been a lifesaver for me! Again, thank you for all your effort, and for Cayl, Ken and “Company” for being willing to share all of this information!
