Your Complete Puppy Training Schedule By Age

Your Complete Puppy Training Schedule By Age

Ellen Wilkie October 15, 2022

In this video, I'm going to show you a puppy training schedule by age, so you can plan your training sessions with your new puppy! Did you know that a puppy's brain is fully developed by the age of 7 weeks? That means, by the time your puppy is ready to come home with you they're ready to learn! Knowing where you should be with your training can be helpful. It is actually more important to understand where you are with your own puppy in terms of progressions, but having a straightforward guide that allows you to schedule your puppy training can be a great way to measure your progress!

“Yes!” has so much value at our house that when the Bears score and we yell “YES!!” All our dogs come running for a reward! LOL

@Momera I used good with my late girls. Worked well. I always wondered about YES though as I heard many trainers use it instead. I think maybe because we say good boy or good girl a lot when they come to us and we repeat it over and over again so it might lose value. Even though we say yes a lot well actually I don’t say yes I say yeah, I think the inflection part is the key thing there

That’s awesome, I’m going to train my puppy her commands that could come up in conversation in French so she doesn’t get confused and so I have the peace of mind that she won’t respond to strangers giving her commands in English. The commands that will be in English are for example “get medicine”

Great video Ken, we’re getting our golden retriever pup in 4 weeks and I’m trying to do my homework before she arrives. Tomorrow I’ll watch it again and take notes 👍 thanks again for creating such great videos. Shame I don’t live in the US as I’d be signing up to your school. Cheers Nigel

Hi there, Nigel! I love the effort you’re putting into preparation for your new puppy! Even if you lived in the U.S. you’d still have to drive north to Canada to train at our facility. No matter where you are though, we do offer online training and we will have a new product that may be right for you in the VERY near future😉 Happy Training ~Ken

My puppy is 10 weeks old, he sits, stayes, goes down, stands, heels and sits when I come to stop; all on command. I started his training since his 7th week.

@legallyred One I am getting a Yorkie and was told no collar use harness because their trachea can easily be damaged by a collar, even if they go to run then get yanked by collar by their own doing🤷🏽‍♀️

@Al Phillips Recipe for disaster. Your dog must be sleeping in a crate now. Unless you keen to bring up a dog full of anxiety and fear. It’s for his/her own good. Everything you put into the dog in this early ages, you harvest later.

@Al Phillips you have a bedroom don’t you? My dog has a lot of room in his crate. Nobody should stuff them in a too small crate and i don’t think that’s what anybody is doing here. Dogs need a safe space that they can be by themselves. Otherwise they don’t learn any independence and they won’t know how to act on their own

Your videos are sooo much more valuable than some of the other (not so “revolutionary”) dog training channels that YT’s algorithm gives preference to. Also, thank you for not killing us with a borage of endorsements and ads for the first fifteen minutes of every video.

This video is gold. Honestly. I’ve been saying for years that YouTube is the best educational resource that has ever existed.

Ken, this video ought to be compulsory viewing for the vast majority of dog owners. I’ve always had German Shepherds and they’ve all been fantastic (always reward-based training) – although the last one, from a more ‘working’ background (I wanted a challenge for Schutzhund) was a little too challenging with crate training at night! After an 8 year gap (children) the time is right and we’ve a beautiful Border Collie, 8 1/2 weeks old. I found you by searching specifically for Border Collie ‘tips’ – understanding just how ‘interesting’ this breed is in particular. I’ve learned a lot of new methods from your video here and I’d encourage people to be aware of the subtle point when watching it that its us that needs to modify our behaviour to get the most out of value training. So many problems are unwittingly caused by the owners.

Our little one is doing a little too well perhaps. It’s almost concerning. She’s quickly gained confidence and has slept every night without so much of a whimper. Last night (day 6) she slept 2300-0630 and I do love to wake her by getting myself ready rather than wait for her to wake. Jan Fennell’s famous methods of ignoring the dog until you’re ready are a great help in keeping them calm in these respects.

Question: when a dog’s doing exceptionally well – do you push on a little ahead with the training or try to keep it steady and allow it to develop naturally as she grows mentally, concentrating instead on reinforcing what they do well?

    Now to train the kids….!

Great resource, these videos are really clear. Training the trainer can be just as challenging as training the puppy but your instructions are so clear and easy to watch over and over to ensure I am getting the actions clear and precise. it’s been my lifeline having acquired a 10 week old puppy last week.

Q, How do you train a small dog (Jack Russell / Pomeranian cross) to lay ‘down’. The lure to bring him to the floor doesn’t work as he is already close enough to the ground whilst standing to reach the treat. It works sometimes but I have to lure far forward and give a hand to encourage him down. The success rate is not high enough to help him learn the right way. Any suggestions? Thanks.

As a first-time dog owner, your channel has been a lifesaver! However, I would really find it helpful to know a schedule or timeline for what skills I can/should be working on at what ages as he gets older. Do you have a document or a video somewhere that has rough ages with what skills they should be able to learn (like a kids’ developmental milestones chart)? Thanks!

Goodness!! I wish I had come across this sooner! I got my first puppy a few weeks ago and I had zero idea of what to do. Potty training was a nightmare, teaching her to not bite felt like it was just taking AGES but then I came across your channel and now I have training set up for the foreseeable future lol I have a lot of work to do! But I’m so thankful to have some kind of direction now❤️❤️
